Join the Rindge Conservation Commission on its first hike of 2026 at Tetreault Park, 7:00 p.m. on January 31. The Moonlight Owl Prowl will start at the parking area located on Rand Road. The event is free and open to the public. Throughout the hike participants will be on the lookout for birds hunting after dark, especially Great Horned and Barred owls that feed throughout winter on small animals like mice, opossums, and shrews. These silent predators are active in January preparing for their breeding season in February. Even if hikers don’t see the park’s resident owls, they can stop and listen for the owls’ distinctive courtship hoots.
David Drouin, Chair Rindge Conservation Commission, will lead the hike along well-defined trails. Participants should meet at the parking lot before 7:00 p.m. Tetreault Park is located on Rand Road. Taking US-202 south approximately two miles from its intersection with NH Route 119, turn right onto Rand Road. The parking lot is on the left after about a mile. Hikers should protect themselves from colder evening temperatures with warm hiking boots, gloves or mittens, hats, and layered clothing. If snow is on the ground, snowshoes or cross-country skis are optional. Cleats or boots with good traction are advisable under icy conditions. Even in winter, good hydration is important during outdoor activities. Hikers are encouraged to bring water and snacks.
January weather can be unpredictable. In case of inclement conditions, check the Town of Rindge website (www.rindgenh.org). If roads are not safe the Conservation Commission will post a cancellation notice.
The Rindge Conservation Commission actively monitors and protects wetlands, lakeshores, watersheds, and other natural resources within the Town of Rindge. Town-owned conservation lands are open to the public for outdoor recreation. Hikes, workdays, special projects, and events are held regularly to involve and educate the public about conservation areas and the benefits of preserving land for the future. These free activities
are made possible by the Rindge Conservation Fund.
